Nomad China eSIM: networks, plans and what Nomad leaves out
What Nomad's own China page says about networks, throttling, setup and Hong Kong, and what it does not say about VPNs or blocked apps.
What does Nomad say about China?
Nomad has a dedicated China page, and it describes a normal Nomad China eSIM: you buy a plan, install it, and the data runs on a local Chinese network. Everything below comes from that page, read on 8 October 2026. We have no Nomad prices for China in our verified data, so we quote none. Our own China coverage is one seller, Airalo, on the China page.
Which networks does a Nomad China eSIM use?
Nomad says the eSIM connects to China Unicom or China Telecom. Some plans offer more than one local network that you can switch between. That is more than we usually get: on the 47 countries we have checked, Nomad names no host network. The China page is an exception, though it does not say which plans offer the choice.
What plans does a Nomad China eSIM come in?
There are two families.
Unlimited plans run for short stays, from 3 days up to 10 days. They carry a daily high-speed allowance. After you use it, the speed drops to 512 kbps until the 24-hour window resets. Nomad adds that speeds and coverage vary by place and time of day.
Metered plans go from 1 GB over 7 days up to 50 GB. The sizes in between are 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB, and the page shows the mid-size ones running 30 days and the 50 GB plan longer than that. Two of them were marked as on sale when we read it. Prices on the page were shown in Canadian dollars to our fetch, so we leave them out; load the page yourself to see the figure in your currency.
You can top up with an add-on, and Nomad says add-ons start by themselves when the first plan ends. New users can claim a free 1 GB trial.
How do you set up a Nomad China eSIM?
Scan the QR code to install. Then you have 60 days from purchase to activate. The plan starts when your phone connects to a Chinese network, not when you buy it. Once there:
- turn the Nomad line on;
- select it for cellular data;
- switch data roaming on.
Nomad warns that some eSIMs need manual activation, and says to check your installation email. Hotspot and tethering are supported, and some plans include a local number.
Will a Nomad China eSIM open Google and WhatsApp?
We cannot answer that from Nomad. The China page does not mention a VPN, internet restrictions or blocked apps. A Trustpilot review quoted on the page says the writer reached Google and Yahoo without a VPN, but that is one customer's account, not a promise from Nomad, and we cannot check it. If access to a particular service matters to you, ask Nomad's support before you buy. Nomad says its chat and email support run 24 hours a day.
Does it cover Hong Kong and Macau?
Nomad's China page does not name either. It lists a separate "Greater China" regional plan across four destinations but does not say which four. It also warns that coverage may not include overseas territories of a country, and tells you to contact support to confirm before you buy. So for Hong Kong or Macau, ask first.
Should you buy it?
For China, price is not the only question, because the plan choices are shaped by the daily throttle and the network. Our Nomad review shows Nomad beating Airalo per gigabyte in 25 of 47 countries, but China is not one of those 47, so that does not carry over. Until someone reads both sellers' China checkouts, compare them by hand on the day. Our cheapest eSIM ranking is the place to look for countries we have priced, and our Nomad eSIM explainer covers how the service works generally. China also appears in Nomad's global eSIM list.
Common questions
What network does the Nomad China eSIM use?
Nomad's China page says the eSIM connects to China Unicom or China Telecom. Some plans offer more than one local network that you can switch between, but the page does not say which plans. Nomad names no host network on the 47 country pages we checked, so China is an exception.
Do I need a VPN with a Nomad China eSIM?
Nomad's China page does not mention VPNs, internet restrictions or blocked apps, so we cannot say. A customer review quoted on the page says the writer reached Google and Yahoo without a VPN, but that is one account, not a promise from Nomad. Ask Nomad support before you buy if a specific app matters.
Does the Nomad China eSIM work in Hong Kong or Macau?
Nomad's page does not name either. It lists a separate Greater China regional plan across four destinations without saying which four, and warns that coverage may not include overseas territories of a country. Contact Nomad support to confirm before you buy if you will cross into Hong Kong or Macau.
When does a Nomad China eSIM start?
You must activate within 60 days of purchase, and the plan starts when your phone first connects to a Chinese network, not when you buy it. At your destination, turn the Nomad line on, select it for cellular data and switch data roaming on. Check your installation email in case manual activation is needed.
Is the unlimited Nomad China eSIM really unlimited?
Not at full speed all day. Nomad's page says unlimited plans, which run from 3 to 10 days, carry a daily high-speed allowance, after which speed drops to 512 kbps until the 24-hour window resets. Nomad adds that speeds and coverage vary by place and time of day.
