Holafly Japan: the Docomo reason to buy it has gone

The fact that used to drive this decision is wrong

This page was built on a single claim: that Holafly's Japan plans were listed on NTT Docomo and SoftBank, and that this made Holafly the only eSIM in our data offering a route to Docomo's rural and mountain coverage. On that basis it told readers Docomo was worth a small premium if they were leaving the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka corridor.

The claim was not Holafly's. When we read Holafly's Japanese prices off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 we found that it names no host carrier for Japan — and none for any of the 28 countries we checked. Holafly publishes no host network at all. The Docomo and SoftBank listing came from our own dataset, and we have removed it rather than restate it as unconfirmed, because a carrier name is exactly the thing a reader uses to decide, and hedging it does not undo that.

So the shortlist of one does not exist. In our Japan data, one seller names a network — eSIM Go, which lists SoftBank on prices nobody has checked. Airalo, Saily, Nomad, Holafly and eSIMCard name nothing. If Docomo coverage is what your trip needs, no travel eSIM sold for Japan can give it to you deliberately.

Where Docomo earns its reputation, and why it is now beside the point

Docomo has the widest rural, mountain and island coverage in Japan. The known national gaps are Japanese Alps hiking trails above 1,500 m, the remote Hokkaido interior, some smaller Okinawa islands, and mountain tunnel sections on certain train lines. Docomo is the network most likely to hold in those places.

For Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and the Shinkansen between them, this makes no practical difference at all. SoftBank and KDDI both cover the corridor at 97%-plus with excellent speed, and the national average is 50 Mbps. Nobody on a first trip to Japan will notice which network they are on.

For Nikko, the mountain trails around Hakone, rural Hokkaido, or the upper reaches of Fushimi Inari after dark, it is a real advantage — and the only way to buy it is a local Docomo SIM. That is the honest scope of the thing now.

Pricing

We read these off Holafly's own site on 18 August 2026. Six lengths, all unlimited, and Holafly sells no others.

This page previously held two prices only — a one-day plan at $3.99 and five days at $18.90 — and said it would not print the rest rather than guess at them. The restraint was right; the two figures were not. There is no one-day Holafly plan in Japan or anywhere else, and five days is $20.50 rather than $18.90.

Set against that, Airalo's unlimited Japan plans are verified at $11.50 for 3 days, $17 for 5, $27 for 7 and $69 for 30. Nomad's are verified at $11 for 3 days, $25 for 7, $41 for 14 and $49 for 21. Holafly is the dearest of the three at every length where they overlap: 40 cents more than Airalo at three days, $3.50 more at five, 50 cents more at seven and $4.90 more at a month. The old "premium for a Docomo listing" argument is gone twice over — there is no Docomo listing, and there is a premium.

The hotspot problem

Holafly Japan does not support hotspot or tethering. This is a network-level restriction, not a setting you can find and switch on. If you need to connect a laptop, a tablet, or a travelling companion's phone, Holafly is the wrong purchase and no amount of troubleshooting will change it.

Solo traveller, phone only: not an issue. Remote worker, or a couple sharing one connection: choose Nomad or Airalo instead.

No calls, no SMS

Same as every tourist eSIM for Japan, and the same as the data-only SIMs sold at Japanese airport counters. You get data. LINE and WhatsApp cover the rest, which in Japan is how most communication with hotels and tour operators happens anyway.

Verdict

Holafly Japan is now hard to recommend to anyone. It is unlimited data at a fair-looking price, but Airalo sells the same thing for less at every duration the two share, permits tethering, and is equally silent about the network. There is no longer a Docomo argument to set against that.

The one group left is people who want unlimited data for exactly 15 or 30 days, use it heavily, and never tether — Airalo sells 15 and 30 days too, at $48 and $69 against Holafly's $50.50 and $73.90, so even they are paying a couple of dollars for nothing in particular.

It does not make sense for anyone who needs to tether, or for a budget traveller on a short city trip — Saily's verified 1 GB / 7 days at $3.99 does that job for a fraction of the money.

The local alternative is worth naming, and it is the only route with any certainty attached. A tourist SIM at a Japanese airport is around $12, sold at staffed counters and 24-hour vending machines at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka and Sapporo, and at a staffed counter you can ask for Docomo and be told yes or no. It needs your passport and it is data-only. If the Alps or rural Hokkaido are the point of the trip, that is the only thing that will actually get you there.
