eSIM Go in Japan: two rows, no shop, and a SoftBank claim that was ours

There is no eSIM Go shop

eSIM Go sells wholesale to resellers — travel brands and apps that put their own name on the eSIM — rather than to travellers. We checked esim-go.com on 18 August 2026: no consumer price anywhere on the site, no basket, no checkout, Contact Sales where a shop puts Buy now, and no per-country pages at all. /japan-esim/, /esim-japan/ and /japan/ each returned 404.

That is why the two Japan figures below have no verification date and never will. There is no published consumer price to read them against. Our eSIM Go platform page sets out the whole finding.

The two rows we hold

No starter plan, nothing above 10GB, no unlimited option, one validity window. We have kept the rows rather than deleting them, because this site presented them as buyable for months.

The $17 is worth a second look. It is not a Japanese price: the identical $17 for 10GB appears in our eSIM Go rows for Australia, France, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Thailand and the United States as well. Nine countries at the same figure to the cent, across wholesale markets with nothing in common. The $8.50 for 3GB repeats in five. That is a template being filled in, and it is the strongest evidence we have about how the original dataset was made.

The SoftBank claim was ours

This page used to treat eSIM Go as the one Japan provider that told you which network you land on, and weighed a dollar of extra cost against that reassurance.

It never told us. eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could — the country URLs 404. The SoftBank entry came out of this site's own generated corpus, exactly like the Japanese carriers we had once attributed to Holafly's listing and later found nowhere on Holafly's site.

Nor is anybody else naming one. We read Airalo's, Nomad's, Saily's and Holafly's own country pages on 17 and 18 August 2026, and not one of them publishes a host carrier for any country. So the honest answer to "which network will I be on in Japan?" is that no travel eSIM seller says.

That is less costly here than almost anywhere. Japan's networks all run above 97% population coverage and the national average sits around 50 Mbps, so nobody notices the difference on the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka corridor. It matters in the mountains, the Hokkaido interior and the smaller islands — and there, since no seller commits to a carrier, a Japanese prepaid SIM is the only way to choose one.

What to buy in Japan instead

Every figure here was read off the seller's own site, and every one is a plan you can complete a purchase for.

Nomad holds every metered size in Japan on prices read at source, and it keeps going to 20GB and 50GB where the eSIM Go rows stop. If your trip is a week rather than a month, Airalo's verified 10GB over 7 days is $17 and its verified 3GB over 3 days is $7.50.

eSIMCard is a different case, and the difference matters. esimcard.com is a working storefront with a checkout, so its prices are ones a traveller can pay; ours were wrong, and all 78 rows were withdrawn on 18 August 2026 once we read its Japan page. eSIM Go's figures cannot be paid by anyone, ever.

Buying on arrival

Japan is one of the countries where an eSIM has a procedural advantage as well as a price one. A local SIM requires a passport or ID at registration, and an airport data SIM runs around $12. We do not hold its allowance, so compare on the day — but the paperwork is real, and a profile installed before you fly skips the counter at Haneda or Kansai.

Verdict

There is nothing to buy. The two eSIM Go figures on this page record what our old dataset held, the network claim that once justified paying a dollar more has been withdrawn as our own invention, and the comparison built on both has gone with them.
