Vodafone Germany SIM card: CallYa prepaid works, but ID comes first

Vodafone's CallYa prepaid needs an identity check, and its own pages do not separately address tourists. Passport and shop are the safe route.

Is a Vodafone Germany SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

It is a reasonable one if you want a German number and will do the paperwork. Vodafone's CallYa is its prepaid brand. The hurdle is registration: Vodafone's help pages say every new prepaid customer in Germany has had to be identified since July 2017. We read Vodafone's pages on 8 October 2026 and found nothing written specifically for tourists.

What can a visitor buy?

CallYa prepaid is sold with both a physical SIM and an eSIM. Vodafone says eSIM orders can be placed online, with the install information sent by email, and that the CallYa eSIM is also available at more than 700 Vodafone shops in Germany, where you identify yourself on the spot. We did not read current tariff prices; they are on the CallYa page and change often.

How does the Vodafone ID check work?

Vodafone's registration help lists several ways to identify yourself: a selfie check, a video call, the online ID function of a German ID card or residence permit, or a visit to a post office. Document types it names include a German identity card or passport and an electronic residence permit. The online ID route needs an ID card or residence permit with the online ID function enabled, a PIN and an NFC phone, which most visitors will not have. After a successful check the SIM is posted to you, which is no use if you leave next week.

We could not find an official Vodafone statement on whether a foreign national ID card is accepted. Forum users report mixed outcomes, including a passport being demanded after a video check was refused. These are user reports, not policy. The reliable route for a visitor looks like a Vodafone shop, with a passport.

Vodafone Germany coverage: what Vodafone says

Vodafone's published numbers vary by release: about 92 percent of people with 5G at the national standalone launch, 94 percent in a later test result it quotes, and LTE for more than 99 percent of people at the end of 2023. Its releases also give a 5G+ figure that differs, and the dates are mixed, so we cannot tell you which is current. These are company and test-organisation figures. Use Vodafone's coverage map for your route.

Vodafone versus a travel eSIM

A CallYa SIM gives a number and local voice, but it involves an ID check and often a shop. A travel eSIM installs before you fly and needs no German paperwork. Our Germany comparison page sets them side by side. Compare also Deutsche Telekom, O2 and 1&1.

Common questions

Can a tourist buy a Vodafone Germany SIM card?

Vodafone sells CallYa prepaid SIMs and eSIMs, but every new prepaid customer in Germany must be identified. Its pages do not separately address tourists. A shop visit with a passport looks the most reliable route for a visitor; confirm with Vodafone before you go.

Does Vodafone CallYa have an eSIM?

Yes. Vodafone says CallYa eSIM orders can be placed online, with install information sent by email, and that the eSIM is also sold in more than 700 Vodafone shops where you identify yourself with your ID. Activation needs an internet connection by Wi-Fi or mobile network.

What ID does Vodafone prepaid need?

Vodafone names a German identity card or passport and an electronic residence permit for the video and post-office checks, and a German ID or permit with online ID for the fastest route. It does not clearly say foreign ID cards are accepted, so bring a passport.

How good is Vodafone coverage in Germany?

Vodafone's releases give about 92 percent 5G population coverage at standalone launch, 94 percent in a test it cites, and LTE for more than 99 percent at the end of 2023. Sources mix dates, so check Vodafone's map for your route.

Is a Vodafone Germany SIM card faster to get than a travel eSIM?

No. Vodafone's identification can mean a video check or shop visit, and a physical SIM is sent by post after an online check. A travel eSIM can be installed before you leave home. See our cheapest eSIM page for options.
