Deutsche Telekom Germany SIM card: strong network claims, hurdles for visitors
Telekom's prepaid tariffs run on its 5G network, but we found nothing written for tourists and the prepaid eSIM route is fiddly.
Is a Deutsche Telekom Germany SIM card a good choice for a visitor?
It is a serious option if you want a German number and care about the network. It is not built for tourists. We read Telekom's pages on 8 October 2026 and found no tourist tariff, no statement on what ID a non-German visitor needs, and a prepaid eSIM process that is less simple than a travel eSIM.
What can a visitor buy?
Telekom sells MagentaMobil Prepaid tariffs, including M, XL and Max versions, without a contract. Its pages say all prepaid tariffs can use its 5G network where it is available. The prepaid pages do not give their own coverage figure and we are not quoting plan prices; the current ones are on Telekom's prepaid page.
A physical prepaid SIM is sold in Telekom shops. For a Telekom eSIM on prepaid, the company's eSIM page describes buying a standard prepaid SIM first, activating it, and then getting a code for the eSIM from customer service, or requesting the prepaid eSIM in the customer centre. Setup uses a QR code or your device's EID. Community answers on Telekom's own help forum add that the security check can use an SMS code sent to the number being replaced, which causes trouble if the old SIM is already off. They also disagree on whether prepaid eSIMs exist at all. Treat the forum posts as user reports.
Registration and ID
German prepaid SIMs must be registered to an identified person. Vodafone's own pages say this has applied to all new prepaid customers since July 2017, and the rule is the same across networks. We did not find Telekom's page on which documents a foreign visitor can use, so bring a passport and ask in a shop before you pay.
Deutsche Telekom coverage: what Telekom says
Telekom's own figures for 5G vary by page: more than 98 percent of people on its 5G tariff page, 95 percent on a smartphone tariff page, and about 92 percent of land area (April 2024) on its network expansion page. These are company claims and not measurements. Where the 5G is missing the network falls back to 4G. Telekom publishes a coverage map for 2G, 4G and 5G that you can check against your itinerary.
Telekom versus a travel eSIM
The strengths of a Telekom SIM are a local number and the carrier's own network claims. The weaknesses for a visitor are identity checks, a shop visit or a delay for the eSIM, and a SIM bought in Germany you may not use again. A travel eSIM installs before you land. See the Germany comparison page, and compare with Vodafone, O2 and 1&1.

Common questions
Does Deutsche Telekom sell a Deutsche Telekom Germany SIM card for tourists?
We found no tourist-specific product. Telekom sells MagentaMobil Prepaid tariffs without a contract, which a visitor can in principle buy, but its pages we read do not say what ID a foreign visitor needs. Bring a passport and check in a Telekom shop.
Can I get a Telekom prepaid eSIM?
Telekom's eSIM page describes activating a standard prepaid SIM first and then getting an eSIM code from customer service, or requesting a prepaid eSIM in the customer centre. Forum posts report that the security check can be awkward. So a Telekom eSIM on prepaid is possible but not instant.
Do Telekom prepaid tariffs get 5G?
Telekom's prepaid pages say its prepaid tariffs can use its 5G network where available. The pages do not give a separate coverage figure for prepaid, and plan terms and prices change, so check the current prepaid page before you buy.
How good is Deutsche Telekom coverage in Germany?
Telekom claims more than 98 percent of people can use its 5G on one page, and 95 percent on another, plus 92 percent of land area as of April 2024. They are the company's own figures. Check its coverage map for your route, particularly in rural areas.
Is a Deutsche Telekom Germany SIM card better than a travel eSIM?
It depends on what you need. A Telekom SIM gives a local number and the carrier's own network, but requires registration and a shop visit or customer service step for eSIM. A travel eSIM is data only and installs before you fly. Compare current prices on our cheapest eSIM page.
