Buying a SIM card at a Colombian airport

The counter here is genuinely fine

This site usually argues against buying a SIM at the airport. Colombia is one of the places where that advice is weakest.

A prepaid SIM at a Colombian airport typically costs about $10. No ID is required — it is an instant purchase, with no passport scan and no registration form. Off-peak, the queue at all three main international airports is around three minutes.

Colombia's four consumer networks are Claro Colombia, Movistar Colombia, Tigo and WOM Colombia. Only the first two appear at these arrival counters in our records.

We hold the $10 entry price but not what allowance it buys, and Colombian prepaid bundles change often. Treat it as the cost of getting a working line, not as a figure to compare gigabyte for gigabyte against a data plan.

Where arriving offline actually hurts

The case for sorting data out before you fly is not really about the ten dollars. It is about the first hour.

Medellín is the clearest example. José María Córdova is about 40 km from the city, down a mountain road, and the transfer is long enough that you want a navigation app running and a fare you agreed in an app rather than at the kerb.

Bogotá puts you at 2,640 m within minutes of landing. Altitude makes everyone slower and less patient on day one; being able to summon a car and follow the route on a screen is worth more than usual.

Cartagena is a walled city of narrow, repetitive streets, and posadas inside the old town are notoriously hard to find on a first visit. Arriving with maps already working saves a genuinely miserable twenty minutes.

None of that requires an eSIM specifically — a counter SIM bought before you walk out does the same job. It does mean you should not plan to sort your connection out later, at the hotel.

What an eSIM costs instead

Two things stand out. The first is that Colombia's small eSIM plans are cheap in absolute terms but poor per gigabyte — $2.90 to $4.00 for a single gigabyte is not far off the price of the whole airport SIM.

The second is the jump at the top of the ladder. Airalo's verified 50 GB at $49 is $0.98 a gigabyte, against $2.05 for the 20 GB at $41 — the larger plan is less than half the unit price of the tier below it. If you are staying a month, do not assume the mid-size plan is the sensible one. It is the worst value on the list.

Which network you end up on

At the counter you pick: Claro or Movistar, in front of you, in the terminal.

With a travel eSIM you are taking the provider's word, and mostly there is not even a word to take. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Colombia or anywhere else. eSIMCard is the only one of the six sellers that publishes a host network at all — we read that on its Japan page — but the Claro and Movistar pair our own data carried for it here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer repeat it. Holafly belongs with the first group: it publishes no host network for Colombia or for any country. Airalo does not publish a host network for Colombia at all; its plans are branded "Chimba" and "Chimba+", which are product names at checkout and not carriers.

There is a third route worth knowing about: Colombia's own carriers sell eSIMs, including to tourists. If you want a local line on a named network without a plastic SIM, that is available here in a way it is not in much of Latin America.
