Magenta Telekom Austria SIM card: the KLAX prepaid option
Magenta's prepaid card is KLAX. It must be registered with ID before it works, and its page does not mention an eSIM. Prices below were read on 8 October 2026.
A Magenta Telekom Austria SIM card means the KLAX prepaid card. It is easy to find, with Magenta saying it is sold through shops, more than 9,600 partners and online, but it cannot be used until you have identified yourself with an ID. That rule makes a quick holiday SIM harder than it sounds.
This is desk research from Magenta's public page, read on 8 October 2026. We have not tested it.
What can a visitor buy with a Magenta Telekom Austria SIM card?
On its KLAX page Magenta shows starter packs "from 10 euros". The KLAX M starter pack costs 10 euros for the first four weeks, then 14.90 euros per four weeks. KLAX S Double Data is 9.90 euros per four weeks for 100 GB, KLAX M Double Data is 14.90 euros for 120 GB, and KLAX Unlimited is 29.90 euros per four weeks. There is also an EU Tour starter pack with 35 GB, then 19.90 euros per four weeks, and a pay-as-you-go Mobile KLAX Basic at 0.09 euros per minute, SMS or MB, capped at 10/2 Mbit/s.
Some of these are promotional offers tied to activations between 1 October and 18 November 2026, and the page itself carries a leftover placeholder, so confirm prices before you buy. The page does not mention an eSIM.
How does Magenta prepaid registration work?
Magenta says the legal identification duty means the card cannot be activated, and calls and internet will not work, until registration is complete. The minimum age is 14. You can identify yourself at a Magenta shop or partner store, or online with ID Austria, online banking or a photo of an ID document. The page does not say which ID documents a foreign visitor can use.
The roaming rules matter if you plan to travel on from Austria: Magenta says EU "Roam like at Home" requires proof of a fixed residence or stable ties to Austria. Read the roaming section before relying on KLAX data in other countries.
What does Magenta say about coverage?
Magenta calls its network the best, citing a connect test from January 2025, and says 5G requires a 5G-capable device. It also states that 5G use is currently only available in limited places. It gives no coverage percentages. Treat the rural and alpine coverage claims you see elsewhere as unconfirmed, and check Magenta's coverage map.
Magenta Telekom Austria SIM card or a travel eSIM?
KLAX gives you an Austrian number and 12 months of validity after first use, with a top-up of at least 10 euros extending it. A travel eSIM needs no local registration and installs before you fly. Our Austria comparison shows how the options differ, and cheapest eSIM lists data-only plans. We do not name the host network of travel eSIMs unless the provider publishes it.
Other Austrian carriers: A1 Telekom Austria and Drei. The Austria hub links everything else.
Common questions
Is a Magenta Telekom Austria SIM card good for tourists?
It is a regular prepaid card, KLAX, not a tourist product. Magenta sells it widely, but you must register with ID before it works and its EU roaming terms ask for ties to Austria. For a short trip, a travel eSIM is usually simpler.
What ID do I need for a Magenta KLAX SIM?
Magenta says the card cannot be activated until you identify yourself. You can do it in a Magenta shop or partner store, or online with ID Austria, online banking or a photo of an ID document. The page does not say which foreign documents it accepts.
How much does a Magenta prepaid SIM cost?
On 8 October 2026 Magenta's KLAX page listed starter packs from 10 euros, such as KLAX M at 10 euros for four weeks then 14.90 euros per four weeks, and KLAX Unlimited at 29.90 euros per four weeks. Some are limited-time promotions, so check the page.
Does Magenta offer an eSIM for KLAX?
The KLAX page we read does not mention an eSIM, so we cannot say. Magenta also does not state eSIM availability for prepaid on that page. Ask Magenta or check its site if you want an eSIM from this carrier.
Does a Magenta SIM work across the EU?
Magenta says some packages include minutes, SMS and data in the EU, but Roam like at Home needs proof of fixed residence or stable ties to Austria. The page is also inconsistent about data roaming on the Basic tariff, so verify before travelling onward.
