Drei Austria SIM card: prepaid options for a short stay

Drei sells prepaid Wertkarte SIMs, but its site shows no tourist SIM and no eSIM for them. Registration with ID and a bank account or ID Austria is required.

A Drei Austria SIM card is a normal prepaid Wertkarte. Drei's pages that we read do not describe a tourist-specific SIM, and they do not say that the prepaid card comes as an eSIM. Registration is legally required and, as Drei describes it, needs a bank account and either photo ID or ID Austria. For a one-week city break that is a lot of admin.

This is desk research from Drei's public pages, read on 8 October 2026. We have not tested the service.

What can a visitor buy with a Drei Austria SIM card?

Drei's prepaid page lists "Talk EU" tariffs, which it says start at 0 euros, and "Surf" tariffs from 10 euros. A tariff package lasts 30 days and renews by itself only if there is enough balance. The page gives example starter-pack contents of 1,000 minutes, 1,000 SMS and 60 GB, but no price for the starter pack, so check the current price on Drei's site. Drei's Talk S tariff is shown with 50 GB, of which 13 GB can be used across the EU.

The page does not say whether a Drei prepaid card is available as an eSIM. It mentions a separate HelloGlobe travel eSIM for use outside the EU, which is not what a visitor to Austria needs. The prepaid Drei Austria SIM card itself stays valid for 12 months after each top-up.

Do you need to register a Drei prepaid SIM?

Yes. Drei's help page calls the registration legally required and sends you to drei.at/meine-wertkarte. You need a valid bank account and a photo ID or ID Austria. Prepaid cards cannot be registered in a company name. The page does not say whether a foreign passport counts as a photo ID, and we could not confirm the registration cost from the page we read. Ask in a Drei shop if you hold only a non-Austrian passport.

What does Drei say about its network and Drei prepaid coverage?

Drei describes its network as the densest 4G network in Austria and as among the fastest worldwide, without figures. The prepaid page makes no 5G claim for the Wertkarte. Drei's headline on its main page mentions a strong 5G network, and it links to a coverage map. We found no coverage percentages on the pages we read, so check the map for your route.

Where does a Drei prepaid SIM beat a travel eSIM?

Mainly if you want an Austrian number, are staying more than a few weeks, or want to top up in small steps. It loses on convenience. A travel eSIM can be installed before departure with no bank account and no registration with the carrier. Our Austria SIM card comparison lays out the trade-off, and the cheapest eSIM page covers data-only plans. We do not name the local network behind travel eSIMs, because most providers do not publish it.

Common questions

Is a Drei Austria SIM card good for tourists?

It works, but it is a standard prepaid card, not a tourist product, and Drei's pages show no tourist SIM. Drei's pages describe 30-day tariff packages and a 12-month card validity for the Drei Austria SIM card. Registration needs a bank account and photo ID or ID Austria, which makes it awkward for short stays. A travel eSIM avoids that.

Does Drei offer an eSIM for visitors?

Drei's prepaid page does not say whether a Wertkarte is available as an eSIM. It only promotes a HelloGlobe travel eSIM for countries outside the EU. Check Drei's site or a Drei shop if you specifically want an Austrian eSIM from this carrier, or buy a travel eSIM instead.

Do I need ID to register a Drei prepaid SIM?

Yes. Drei says registration is legally required and asks for a valid bank account plus a photo ID or ID Austria, at drei.at/meine-wertkarte. It does not say whether foreign passports are accepted, so confirm in a Drei shop before relying on it.

How long does a Drei prepaid package last?

Drei says a tariff package is valid for 30 days and renews automatically only if your balance covers it. The card itself stays valid for 12 months after each top-up. The page does not list roaming charges for the Wertkarte; those sit on a separate Drei roaming page, so check it before you cross a border.

Should I pick Drei or another Austrian network?

Drei's pages claim a dense 4G network but give no figures, and we found no tourist SIM. A1 sells a dedicated Travel eSIM. For specific valleys or hiking routes, check each carrier's own coverage map before you buy anything. Our Austria comparison page covers the main choices.
