Claro Argentina SIM card: what a visitor can actually buy
Claro sells a prepaid chip and a prepaid eSIM online, but its site does not say whether a visitor can use them or what ID is needed.
Is a Claro Argentina SIM card a good choice for a visitor?
Possibly, but we cannot say it is the easy choice, and we would rather tell you why. Claro's own site sells a prepaid chip and a prepaid eSIM, yet it never mentions tourists, passports or the ID needed to register a line. For a short trip, that gap matters more than any plan detail. If you are staying weeks and can handle a shop visit in Spanish, a Claro SIM card is worth a look. If you land at night and want data in the taxi, it is not obviously the best fit.
What can you buy from Claro in Argentina?
On Claro's personal homepage, read on 8 October 2026, there are two prepaid routes.
- Prepaid chip. A banner invites you to request a "chip prepago", which leads to an online form. The page does not show a price for the chip or say how it is delivered.
- Prepaid eSIM. A second banner offers an eSIM "100% online" for Claro Prepago, activated by scanning a QR code. The linked page loaded with a title ("Línea nueva con eSIM") but no readable body text for us, so we cannot give you device lists, fees or conditions.
Claro's prepaid page also advertises first-recharge perks such as free gigabytes and WhatsApp for a set number of days. Those promotions change and carry terms we could not read in full, so we do not repeat the figures. Claro's current prices are on its site: Claro prepaid.
What does Claro say about its coverage?
Not much that we can use. The homepage and prepaid page make no 4G or 5G claims. They link to coverage pages: one lets you check coverage at a home address with an adviser, and another is a general coverage page under prepaid plans. We have not seen a map or a figure, so we make no claim about how far a Claro line reaches outside Buenos Aires. If you plan to drive in Patagonia or the north, check the map on Claro's own coverage page before you rely on any one carrier.
Do you need ID to register a Claro SIM?
The pages we read do not state any registration or ID requirement for prepaid lines, and they say nothing about foreign passports. Do not assume either way. Ask at a Claro shop, or read the terms and conditions link on the prepaid page, before you plan around buying online from abroad.
Claro compared with a travel eSIM
A Claro prepaid line gives you a local Argentine number, which helps for delivery apps, restaurant bookings and taxis. A travel eSIM is bought and installed before you fly, so you land with data. For most visitors on a one- or two-week trip that is simpler; our Argentina SIM card comparison and cheapest eSIM page set out the options. To see the other two big networks, read our guides to Movistar in Argentina and Personal in Argentina, or return to the Argentina hub.
Bottom line
Our verdict on the Claro Argentina SIM card is cautious. The Claro prepaid chip and Claro eSIM exist and can be ordered online, but until Claro's site says what a visitor needs, treat Claro coverage and the Claro tourist SIM question as open and check in a shop.
Common questions
Does Claro Argentina sell a SIM card to tourists?
Claro's site sells a prepaid chip and a prepaid eSIM online, but the pages we read do not mention tourists, passports or visitor plans. That means we cannot confirm a visitor can buy one without local documents. Ask in a Claro shop, or check the terms and conditions on its prepaid page, before relying on it.
Does Claro Argentina have an eSIM?
Yes. Claro's homepage offers a prepaid eSIM described as 100 percent online, activated by scanning a QR code. The eSIM page we reached showed only a title and no readable details, so we cannot list compatible phones, fees or limits. Check the page itself, simple.claro.com.ar/esimple, for the current terms.
How much is a Claro prepaid SIM in Argentina?
We cannot give a reliable number. Claro's pages show recharge promotions and a form link but no clear chip price we could confirm, and prices in Argentina change often. Claro's current prices are on its prepaid page, linked in the sources below. Treat any price you see elsewhere as out of date.
Is Claro coverage good in Argentina?
Claro's site makes no 4G or 5G claims on the pages we read and only links to coverage tools. We therefore cannot say how wide its coverage is. If you are leaving Buenos Aires, use Claro's own coverage page and compare it with the other carriers before buying.
Is a Claro SIM card better than a travel eSIM in Argentina?
It depends on the trip. A Claro prepaid line gives you a local number, but you must buy and register it, and the site is silent on visitor rules. A travel eSIM is installed before you fly. For short trips most people find the eSIM simpler; for long stays a local line can make sense.
