What is actually sold at ORD

InMotion Entertainment has stores in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5 — Terminal 5 being the international one, where your flight will have landed if you came from outside the country. There are also T-Mobile kiosks at O'Hare, but our source says only "some terminals" without naming them, so we cannot tell you to look for one in Terminal 5 specifically. Do not walk anywhere on the strength of that.

We hold no opening hours for the InMotion stores or the kiosks, and no record of whether any of them sit before or after customs. The wait once you reach a counter is 10–15 minutes.

The number that dominates everything else

O'Hare's international immigration queue can run 45 to 90 minutes on a busy day — summer weekends, holiday travel, and the arrival windows when European flights land in a bank. Add customs and baggage reclaim on top and two hours can pass between wheels down and standing in arrivals.

This reframes the SIM question at ORD. Ten to fifteen minutes at a counter is not what costs you time here; it is a small addition to something already large. What matters is that during the whole of that immigration queue, a phone with a pre-installed eSIM is already connected and a phone waiting for an airport counter is not. That is an hour or more of being reachable, telling someone you have landed, and rebooking whatever your delay has broken — not ten minutes saved at a till.

No ID, about $20, and the online prices

The United States asks for no identification to activate a prepaid SIM: no passport, no licence, no address. Our data puts a typical US airport SIM at around $20. Every row below is a complete US data package read from the seller's own site on 13 August 2026.

Read to the bottom before you choose. The 50GB plan with 30 days of validity costs $0.84 a gigabyte, the best rate anywhere in the US data and roughly a quarter of what the 1GB plans cost per gigabyte. The market does not stop at 10 or 20GB here, and the largest plan is the cheapest one per gigabyte, which is the opposite of how airport counters are usually priced.

The network question, which has no answer

None of the eSIM sellers we track for the United States — Saily, Airalo, eSIM Go, Nomad, eSIMCard — publishes which American network its plans use. Nobody states it, so you cannot choose on that basis and you should ignore any advice that tells you to. The only place the network is knowable is a carrier's own kiosk, where a T-Mobile counter sells T-Mobile service — and at O'Hare we cannot even tell you which terminal to find one in.

What to do

Install before you fly. O'Hare is the airport in our US set where that advice is strongest, because the time you save is not queue time at a counter, it is the hour or more you spend shuffling towards a passport booth with a working phone instead of a dead one. Check the compatible phones list first if you are not sure your handset takes an eSIM; if it does not, the counters are a reasonable fallback at roughly $20 with no ID.

Once you are out, the Blue Line runs from O'Hare straight into downtown Chicago at Clark/Lake in about 45 minutes with no transfer, which is as good as US airport rail gets. Full US plan pricing and the local-SIM comparison are on the USA hub.
