eSIMCard in New Zealand: the cheap short-trip plan has gone from our data

Both New Zealand rows have been withdrawn

This review recommended eSIMCard for a short urban trip on the strength of two prices — a one-gigabyte three-day plan and a three-gigabyte week. Both rows have now been withdrawn, out of the table here and out of the cheapest-per-gigabyte ranking across the site, and the recommendation has gone with them rather than been hedged.

The word those rows carried was indicative: our number rather than one read at a checkout, but close enough to quote. That is precisely what turned out not to be true. We read eSIMCard's own pages on 18 August 2026 and found the entry plan our data repeated at one price across fifteen unrelated countries goes for well under half that on its Japanese page. "Indicative" describes a figure that might be roughly right. We now have direct evidence ours was not.

Nor could we simply substitute the correct figures. Our records have room for a provider, a size, a number of days and a price, and eSIMCard prices the same size over the same days at two or three different amounts — depending on a Standard/Universal toggle that swaps the entire catalogue between product lines, on a per-plan speed limit hidden inside each plan's details modal, and on carrier sets that change from one plan to the next. Storing one price per size would assert that a throttled plan and a full-speed plan are the same product. The reasoning is set out on our eSIMCard page.

What an eSIM for New Zealand actually costs

The network question you cannot answer in advance

Spark is the network worth having here: our carrier notes make it the only network covering the Milford Road towards Milford Sound, the West Coast and remote South Island routes. One NZ is good in urban areas and has genuine rural gaps, a consequence of very low population density and rugged terrain.

The two carriers our own records held against eSIMCard's New Zealand rows came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer present them as its listing. And no seller publishes which of a paired set your phone would attach to in any case, so treat any such pairing as a coin toss weighted by where you are standing. That is manageable if your trip is Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown. It is a bigger risk on Highway 6 down the West Coast.

Either way, some places have no coverage from anyone: Milford Sound is offline, as are Fiordland National Park, the West Coast hinterland, Central Otago back roads, remote parts of the Abel Tasman coastal track and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing summit. New Zealand's average speed on our figures is 72 Mbps, so where there is signal it is quick.

What eSIMCard still does that nobody else does

eSIMCard is the only one of the six sellers on this site that publishes the host network at all. We read that directly: its Japan page names three Japanese operators against its plans, in a Supported Countries & Networks block. Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly name no operator in any country, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could. That is a genuine difference, and the price check left it untouched.

The carriers our own records held against its rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so those are ours to withdraw and not its claim to defend. Its own country listing is the place to look. New Zealand is a country where it would be worth real money — Spark is the only network covering the Milford Road, the West Coast and the remote South Island routes.

Verdict

We have no New Zealand price for eSIMCard, so this page no longer recommends it for anything. That is a gap in our records rather than a verdict on the shop.

The durable advice is unchanged: a short urban trip needs very little data, and a two-week South Island drive should be planned around coverage rather than price.
